Parental notification law takes effect

A win for the GOP is a loss for young women in New Hampshire, who will now be required to notify a parent before obtaining safe, legal abortion care, even in the case of rape or incest.

NH Legislature Fails Young Women

Today, June 22, the House and Senate failed to put teen safety first by voting to override Gov. Lynch’s veto of HB 329, the parental notification mandate. The law, which takes effect January 1, 2012, will force young women to notify a parent 72-hours before seeking abortion care, or face a judge for a ‘judicial by-pass’.

Lynch Puts Teen Safety First

Yesterday, June 15, Gov. John Lynch vetoed HB 329, the parental notification mandate. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who signed our Teen Safety First petition, emailed, or called the Governor. You made this happen.

 

‎”The decision whether to complete a pregnancy or seek an abortion is a serious and life-changing one for any pregnant woman. Minors need and benefit from the support and guidance of their parents. However, any law must make reasonable allowances for cases where that is not possible. I am particularly troubled by the lack of an exception for the victims of rape, incest and abuse.” Gov. Lynch on why he vetoed HB 329.
